Karen Wientjes received her Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Scranton in 1994. She received her Master’s degree in Public Health from West Chester University in 2000 and a post-professional Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree from Neumann University in 2006. She is pursuing a Ph.D. in Mind-Body Medicine at Saybrook University.
Karen has been practicing wound care since 1996 and has been board certified as a Certified Wound Specialist (CWS) through the American Board of Wound Management (ABWM) since 1999. She currently serves on the Board of Directors as the elected President of the ABWM, an organization that administers credentialing examinations to multi-disciplinary professionals in wound management. She is also a member of the Academy for the Advancement of Wound Care (AAWC).
Before coming to Optimum, Karen managed a hospital-based wound care and hyperbaric medicine program for over 12 years. She participated in several multi-center national and international clinical trials. Karen’s background in wound management also includes clinical education and consultative visits at several local hospitals. She provides physical therapy and wound care through mission work in Peru and Haiti.
In addition to her clinical practice, she is a Professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Neumann University in Aston, PA. She enjoys working with students and teaching the next generation of physical therapists. Karen has been actively involved with the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) throughout her career.
She presents nationally and internationally on topics related to wound healing and physical therapy. Her areas of research include wound measurement, biophysical agents, and integrative approaches to healing. She brings her expertise in wound management to Optimum and emphasizes a mind-body approach to healing, developing a unique and holistic care plan for each patient.
